Kenya’s national soccer team Harambee Stars Head coach Francis Kimanzi, assistant Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno and the entire backroom stepped down on Tuesday from their roles on what was termed ‘mutual consent’.
“The Federation is immensely grateful to Coach Kimanzi and his departing members of staff that include Assistant Coach Zedekiah Otieno and Goalkeeper Trainer Lawrence Webo for their exemplary work, dedication and unrivalled professionalism, which has strengthened Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the AFCON 2022 final tournament,” said FKF in a statement.
The federation wished them well, in their future endeavors, this even as the search for a replacement to take the national team forward ”begins in earnest”.
Though the federation was careful to craft their statement to show that it was an” amicable parting of ways”, it’s clear the technical bench has been sacked, barely 15 days after leading the team to a 2-1 win over Zambia in a friendly match.
There are reports that very experienced former Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee is set to take over. Mulee last coached Kenya in 2010 and is credited with having led the team to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Tunisia.
