Mental Health
By Eminence Oreoluwa Ojo

The last 18 months have been quite tough on most people, and this has caused a lot of people to go through a rough patch, especially if they do not have anyone to share their pain with.

This begs the question; “When was the last time you sought mental help?” Or when last were you honest about your mental health and emotional state?”

Mental illnesses are more common than we care to admit. They can affect anyone, and nobody is immune to them. Over time I have heard people say things like “We are not mad in our family” or “We don’t have depressed people” or “None of my loved ones is ill mentally.” While saying this, they believe they do not have mental health issues. So, they do not need to be aware of their mental health. However, this proposition requires examination.

Mental health should be everyone’s concern. You have to guard it with all you have. Because mental health changes with life’s journey, a person who is living a fantastic life may slip into depression, if a certain life challenge comes their way. Therefore, you must be conscious of your mental health and take adequate care of it. Be sure to look out for mental health triggers.

At Success Afrika we care about your mental health because to live a successful life, you must be mentally sound. So, we will be sharing some tips for ensuring a healthy mental state.

1. Take care of your physical health: A healthy body births a healthy mind. Taking care of your body, getting enough rest, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly will help you get a healthy body and a sound mind.

2. Connect with positive people: Having a good relationship with positive people helps open your mind to the positivity around you. You share a positive experience with them and focus on the positive vibes around you.

3. Do things you enjoy: Try as much as possible to do things you enjoy. This helps improve your happiness, essential to your mental well-being. Your mind registers the happy memories and draws strength from them.

4. Be open with your feelings: Don’t keep your feelings bottled up. Speak up. Share your feelings with people.

5. Make yourself valuable: Give yourself a break when you need it. Rest and re-strategize. Take regular breaks such as a day off or time off to rest.  Resting when needed makes you feel positive and more productive.

Take time to reaffirm positive words to yourself. Positive affirmations remind you that you are perfect, yet expanding, and you can do much more. It helps you focus on your positive part and gives you strength.

Most importantly, in mental healthcare, the place of a professional cannot be overemphasized. Seek help when you feel there is something not so right about how you feel. Prioritizing your mental health is the first step to enjoying a successful life. Because it is okay not to be okay.

Happy Healthy Mental Health Week.
