Gov’t Focuses on Global Jobs in Nationwide Recruitment Drive

The Kenyan government has launched an ambitious initiative to tackle unemployment by connecting skilled and semi-skilled workers with international job opportunities.

The National Job Recruitment Program, spearheaded by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua, aims to place one million Kenyans in overseas jobs annually, boosting the country’s foreign exchange earnings and creating new pathways for economic growth.

The program officially kicks off at the Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind, with the first phase targeting 20 counties by year-end. Over 20,000 job opportunities are expected to be offered in the initial phase.

Dr. Mutua emphasized the importance of proper documentation, urging applicants to secure essential credentials such as passports and certificates of good conduct through the e-Citizen platform to streamline the process.

“Applicants must ensure these requirements are completed to facilitate processing by relevant authorities,” Dr. Mutua stated, underscoring the program’s meticulous approach to candidate vetting.

Currently, over three million Kenyans are working abroad, and the government views labor migration as a vital economic lever.

Dr. Mutua assured prospective applicants of protections under international and local labor laws, addressing fears of mistreatment that have shadowed overseas employment in the past.

He noted that while isolated incidents of mistreatment have occurred, such cases should not deter Kenyans from exploring opportunities abroad.

“The actions of a few engaging in illegal activities have complicated efforts in some countries, but we remain committed to safeguarding the interests of law-abiding workers,” Dr. Mutua added, urging Kenyans to uphold the nation’s reputation.

This recruitment initiative reflects the government’s focus on leveraging global labor markets to create opportunities, reduce unemployment, and enhance livelihoods for Kenyan families.
