Don't lose ideas to Selfishness
By Nadia Muthoni

Selfishness is not confined to one’s desire for tangible things; it also relates to one’s pursuit of excellence. There is nothing wrong with wanting to excel in all areas of life. After all, it helps one stay focused in this highly competitive world.
While staying focused in this highly competitive world, many people are selfish with their ideas because they fear others will steal them. However, in some organizations, sharing ideas is considered teamwork because implementers, investors, producers and exhibitors who can take those ideas to the next level are found there.

Importance of sharing ideas

In most cases, two heads are better than one. An idea has the potential to become huge and implementable when shared with different people. Is it better to hold 15 per cent shares in a company that grew from your idea or have 100 per cent ownership of an idea that hasn’t yet been implemented? Indeed, we all have different strengths in different areas, and sometimes collaborative efforts can turn ideas into massive projects. We all can’t be good at everything. Sometimes, it takes another person to turn your idea into what you imagined.
Have you ever come across people who keep books with ideas written in them, and when you ask what is holding them from actualizing the ideas, they say they are waiting for when they will have enough money? Then you wonder why people die poor and with great potential to succeed? They were too selfish to share their ideas with the world.

Gauge capabilities of implementing ideas

We have to gauge our capabilities in implementing ideas. Sometimes we are gifted with the ability to brainstorm, while the gift of implementation is given to others. Until we realize this, we will forever fill our books with dust and cobwebs, and the inks of our written ideas will fade away slowly. How are we then making this world better if we only act in our own interest?
There are always investors willing to invest in bankable ideas; sharing these ideas becomes a win-win situation where you both win and benefit other people. Too much Selfishness is destructive not only to other people and the environment but also to oneself.
Different people thrive in partnership while others thrive in a sole proprietorship. Gather people with whom you share a common goal, who have a winning mindset and not a selfish one. That way, you can move your ideas to action plans and finally to the realization of your dreams.
