Young professionals, students, and entrepreneurs across Africa now have a dedicated platform to drive sustainable forestry initiatives, thanks to the newly launched AfricanYouth4Forests (AY4F) Community of Practice.
The initiative, spearheaded by the African Forest Forum (AFF) in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), aims to empower Africa’s youth to tackle pressing environmental challenges through knowledge-sharing, innovation, and networking.

Leaders Highlight Youth’s Crucial Role
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Labode Popoola, Executive Secretary-CEO of AFF, emphasized the importance of youth engagement.
“Young people are key to shaping the future of Africa’s forests. This platform will equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to lead sustainable change.”
Dr. Jane Njuguna, CEO of KEFRI, echoed this sentiment, stating that empowering youth in environmental stewardship ensures the long-term health of forests, adding that this initiative is a vital step toward inclusive and sustainable forestry.
Highlighting the transformative potential of youth-led innovation, Sara Gräslund, Head of SLU Global, said, “Africa’s youth can redefine sustainable forest management. By working together, we can unlock green economy opportunities and build climate-resilient futures.”
A Collaborative Space for Change
The AY4F platform will serve as a hub for young leaders to exchange ideas, develop solutions, and advocate for sustainable forest management.
From March 31 to April 11, 2025, participants will engage in live discussions, interactive chats, and webinars hosted virtually via Howspace, fostering dialogue on forest conservation, climate resilience, and green economic opportunities.
A Broader Mission for a Greener Africa
The AY4F initiative aligns with AFF’s commitment to advancing sustainable forestry while promoting research, mentorship, and policy engagement. With a focus on Kenya and Cameroon, the project also leverages digital outreach to engage young people across the continent through workshops, online forums, and international collaborations.
A Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will provide strategic guidance, ensuring youth perspectives shape forestry policies and practices.
Join the Movement
Young professionals, activists, scientists, and policymakers are encouraged to join the AY4F Community of Practice and contribute to a greener Africa.
