MTV Africa Music Awards return with online version

The 2021 version will recognize talent from across the African continent including stars from Lusophone and Francophone countries. Several award categories have been added to recognize emerging African youth.

The continent’s premier entertainment gala which showcases African culture, music, and creativity will be held in a re-imagined virtual format due to restrictions on gatherings occasioned by the Corona Virus.

MTV Africa and MTV Base who are organizing the event in conjuction with Uganda, said the 2021 event will fete musicians, trailblazers and those who are shining a light on the continent’s diverse talent and creativity by instilling positive impact on African music and youth culture in the past year. Standout contributions from Lusophone and Francophone countries will recognized too.

Altogether, African talent across 20 award categories, including Best Male, Best Female, Best Song, and Best Collaboration will be awarded.

In a show of support for upcoming youth by MTV Base, the entertainment giants are debuting several categories including the MTV Africa Music Awards Generation Change Award, Best Fan Base, Alone Together Best Lock-down Performance and Personality of the Year.

The category selection period is from October 2019 to October 2020. The nominees will be announced in December 2020 and fans will then vote for their favourite stars online.

The event will be broadcast live on February 20, 2021, on MTV channels across multiple continents as a one-hour MAMA-themed MTV World Stage feature.
