KTDA Warns of Political Interference Hurting Tea Earnings

The KTDA Holdings Board and 54 tea factory companies under Kenya Tea Development Agency Holdings Limited have raised alarm over growing political interference in the tea sector, warning that it is undermining international tea sales and significantly reducing farmers’ earnings.

According to the directors, negative media publicity has exacerbated the situation by discouraging international buyers, resulting in decreased demand and lower profits for farmers.

They cited instances of interference, including the removal of reserve prices without consultation, politicians making pronouncements on factory separations without considering farmers’ property interests, government agencies holding impromptu meetings at farmers’ expense, interference in board disputes at Michimikuru Tea Factory, and tampering with the judicial process. Additionally, officers of the National Police Service were accused of facilitating an illegal meeting and failing to contain violence during the Annual General Meeting in December 2024.

Speaking at a Nairobi hotel, the directors called on stakeholders to respect democratic processes, uphold the rule of law, and avoid interfering with boards duly elected by farmers. They also emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes.

Acknowledging the confusion and concern caused by these developments, the directors reassured all parties that the matter would be handled within the framework of existing legal and corporate governance structures.

They reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, accountability, and legal compliance, urging patience as the issue progresses through appropriate channels. The board is also seeking a meeting with His Excellency President William Ruto to address the situation.

In the meantime, the current board and management remain focused on safeguarding the interests of stakeholders, employees, and the public.
